EMTALA Medical Screening Examinations Obligations

Date: 12/12/2018

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Application has been made to the ND Board of Nursing for nursing continuing education hours.

Presented by Melissa Hauer, General Counsel & VP of Advocacy, NDHA

Target Audience: Emergency room physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other staff who interact with ER patients.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), although enacted 32 years ago, continues to be a source of confusion for hospital emergency staff.  EMTALA governs when and how a patient who comes to an emergency department must be examined and offered treatment. Participants will learn the essential requirements of EMTALA, what constitutes an appropriate medical screening examination, and when a hospital's obligations under EMTALA end. The webinar will also cover the significant fines that may be imposed against not only hospitals, but individual physicians, for violating the statute.
